Bernfried E. G. Pröve, born in Braunschweig in 1963, began to attract attention with his own compositions at the age of 9. At the age of 14, he received a scholarship from the Braunschweig Municipal Music School for pre-professional, specialized musical training, where he studied with Hans-Dieter Meyer-Moortgat and Prof. Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, majoring in piano.

At the University of the Arts, Pröve completed his studies in school music (majoring in church organ) and composition with Prof. Isang Yun in 1986.

From 1986-91 Pröve studied composition (Prof. Klaus Huber), conducting (Prof. Francis Travis), electronic music (Prof. Mesias Maiguasca) and music theory (Prof. Peter Förtig) in postgraduate studies and graduated in 1994.

This was followed by composition courses with Franco Donatoni, Elliot Carter, Gerard Grisey, Tristan Murail and Philippe Manoury.

In the same year he received a scholarship to the Villa Massimo in Rome.

In 1995 he was selected for the one-year „Cursus de composition et d’informatique musicale“ and at the same time received the coveted Villa Massimo scholarship for a 1-year stay at Villa Massimo, Rome.

He then studied at the ECOLE DES HAUTES ÉTUDES EN SIENCES SOCIALES as a doctoral student with Hugues Dufourt.

1996-1998 Pröve studied conducting with Peter Eötvös at the International Peter Eötvös Institute and conducted, among others, the Klangforum Wien as well as the Gächinger Kantorei during a conducting course with Helmuth Rilling.

He received commissions – among others – from Donaueschingen for „FERNUNG-HORIZONT-NÄHE“ for large orchestra and 4 orchestra groups, the music series „Ars Nova“, the SWR-Stuttgart for his choral work „MERZ-TRANSITUS“, the Hamburg Opera for the orchestral piece „ANTHAER“, the BIENNALE Neue Musik, Hannover, the Music Festival Metz for the orchestral work „DIASTASE“, the Jena Philharmonic for the 1. SINFONIE and the Staatstheater Braunschweig for his ballet „DIE REISE ZU DEN SIEBEN PLANETEN“, the Bibel & Kulturstiftung for the multimedia oratorio „JOSEF UND SEINE BRÜDER“, „SOUNDSCAPES-MOTOR&EMOTIONS“ SBK-Stiftung, Braunschweig.

He received, among others, the Kazimierz Serocki Composition Competition, the Carl Orff Prize for Opera Composers, the GRAND PRIX for Composition of JEUNESSES MUSICALES Belgrade and the 1st prize for his orchestral work „ANTHAER“ of the State Capital Stuttgart.

In 1991 he was the European representative at the „World Composers Forum“ in Montreal with his work „TRACT“ for ensemble and was selected for the preliminary round of the composition competition „Gläserne Fabrik“ Dresden.

Bernfried E. G. Pröve gave composition courses in Skopje, at the Youngnam-University in Dae-Gu (Korea), the Hochschule für Musik Dresden, the NY Music Akademie and at the China Conservatory of music, Bejing China.

At the moment Bernfried E. G. Pröve is writing the chamber opera „EZRA“ after a libretto by Axel Klingenberg based on texts by Ezra Pound as well as the children’s opera: „Kalif Storch“ after Wilhelm Hauff, the work „ZEITWELLEN“ for saxophone quartet (for the Adumá saxophone quartet) and the 8th Streichquartett with the title „IM ZEITGEPFLECHT“ in memoriam Klaus Huber.

In 2007/2008 Pröve was commissioned by the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich to compose a full-length ballet entitled „THE LITTLE PRINCE“ after Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The premiere took place with sensational success on 19.10.2008 at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich.

Pröve’s works are regularly performed worldwide, among others in the Konzerthaus Berlin, Genoa, Tokyo, Montreal, Seoul, Skopje, Tongyong, Seattle, Chicago and New York City.
